MOTHER
EARTH TERRA MADRE (12A) |
| The
production of food is being exploitedmore than ever as ameans
of “exerting power”, says Slow Food founder
Carlo Petrini. The idea behind themeeting of the TerraMadre
network is tomake food, and those who produce it, a focal
point of our lives oncemore. According to the philosophy
of the Slow Food organisation, food should taste good, be
produced in a clean way and fairly traded. In his film,
Ermanno Olmi examines whether Slow Food has found an ingenious
way of solving such global problems as climate change and
starvation. |

OPEN
CITY CITTÀ APERTA (12A) |
| One
of the Eternal City's most flourishing periods came just
after the SecondWorld War when Rome was amelting pot and
ameeting point for the Allies, the boogiewoogie, paisà
(compatriots), sciuscià (street urchins) and filmicons
such as De Sica, Rossellini, AnnaMagnani and Aldo Fabrizi.
The Rome of cultural circles, of literary trattorias and
coffee bars where famous painters and writers would talk
and argue. The city where Visconti's first films were screened.
The “Hollywood” on the Tiber between Via Veneto
and Cinecittà. It was also the corrupt city of scandals,
but also a place of science, fashion, the Sistine Chapel
and The Holy Year. Of Fellini’s La Dolce vita, of
Antonioni, Bassani, Soldati and Dino Risi with his filmEasy
Life / Il Sorpasso. The beautiful city where everything
is possible: where everyone gets together and everyone is
eager to live and leave behind the tragedies of war. Archivematerial
comes fromIstituto Luce and RAI while the sound track consists
of original songs of the time. |

PINUCCIO
LOVERO: A MIDSUMMER DEATH'S
DREAM (12A) |
| Pinuccio
Lovero has always dreamt of being an undertaker. At forty
he finally finds a temporary job as guardian of the cemetery
inMariotto, a town near Bitonto, in the deep, hot south
of Italy. In themiddle of a scorching summer, he is waiting
for his first funeral. In fact, in the first fivemonths
since he arrived in the town, nobody has yet passed away.
Pinuccio is yearning for a funeral but the inhabitants are
elated. Sooner or later someone will die and Pinuccio stands
hopefully awaiting at the gate of “his” cemetery.
Director PippoMezzapesa has a keen eye for detail in the
cemetery, such as the flowers and photos on the graves.
Visitors walking among the tombstones in slow motion, bringing
flowers for their loved ones, provide a framework for Pinuccio's
story. |
